Event 1: Essay Competition

Writing in Displacement

Focus on Sri Lankan Writers

Writing Contest for Undergraduate Students

This literary event will feature four writers from Sri Lanka who will read from their poetry and fiction on themes relating to displacement. Click here for information on author biographies and detailed schedule.

The writing competition is open to all undergraduate students from Penn State. You can win five prizes of $100 each.

Guidelines:

  1. The writing will be single-spaced and under 2 pages (or under 1000 words in Times New Roman 12-point font).
  2. The general subject of the writing is displacement. You can address any themes related to this subject.
  3. The content will reflect an engagement with the writing and performance of one or more of the authors featured in this event. We are especially interested in texts that demonstrate evidence of participation in the readings and conversations.
  4. The writing can be stylistically bold and experimental. Creative genres in response to the themes and writers are relevant. Critical essays are also very welcome.
  5. The deadline for submission is midnight April 11th 2025, a week after the event.
  6. Please send your submission in pdf format to Professor Suresh Canagarajah at asc16@psu.edu
  7. Include a cover page that lists your full name, major/department, and contact information including your Penn State email address.
  8. Prize money will be transferred to your student accounts by the Paul Robeson Cultural Centre.

For inquiries and clarifications, you can write to asc16@psu.edu
